Q&A with Dr. Liss
What is menopause?
Menopause occurs (or can be diagnosed) after 12 months without a period. The entire time when hormonal changes are occurring (which can last up to 7-14 years) is called the menopause transition or perimenopause. Hormonal changes and symptoms typically begin prior to the final period.Q&A with Dr. Liss
What are the symptoms of perimenopause?
Perimenopause can bring various symptoms like hot flashes, trouble sleeping, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. But with 34+ possible symptoms, each person will experience perimenopause differently.Q&A with Dr. Liss, OB-GYN
IS THERE A SPECIAL MENOPAUSE DIET I SHOULD BE FOLLOWING?
During menopause, it's important to prioritize nutrition. The building blocks of good menopause nutrition should include all food groups. Prioritize protein, fiber, fruits and veggies, and healthy fats that support your body's needs. Rather than restricting what you eat, focus on adding small consistent changes that can enhance your nutrition. Talk to your healthcare provider before making any changes to your diet.
WHAT ARE SIGNS PERIMENOPAUSE IS ENDING?
Signs that perimenopause may be ending are improvements in symptoms. This can include more irregular periods, decreased hot flashes and night sweats, less frequent mood swings and irritability, and improvement with sleep issues. Symptoms will continue to improve after the final menstrual period and continue for most people for 2+ years after the final period. Genital, sexual, and urinary symptoms may require ongoing treatment.
